This is pretty normal if you live near a nuclear plant. You can get them in the US if you are with in certain radius and request them.
It's not super effective in the case of shit really going bad but might protect your thyroid while you get out during a minor problem. Does absolute nothing once you are already irradiated though.

yeah canada does this on a regular basis. I work at one of these plants. KI pills are used to prevent thyroid cancer from radioactive isotopes of iodine. Other than that they don't really do much.
Chernobyl did a shitload of damage because the builders were cheap fucks and made one of their containment building roofs out of fucking wood which caught fire and released contaminated gas/dust. The KGB had sent them warnings about their shitty plant design and not following procedures for well over a year before the incident.
Worse case scenario there would be another 3-mile island where no one died but the building was destroyed.
