At 17, this same kids age, I was pretty big myself (6-1 180lbs), played sports and was pretty cocky. One time my old man told me something I didn't like and I lipped off. He got in my face and was yelling at me and I shoved him with both hands and waded in with a punch. I was pretty mad, but honestly I knew what I was doing at the time. I thought he wouldn't really do anything, or much of anything.
Well long story short he beat the fuck out of me. Worst beating I have ever got, and I was in more than a few bar fights in my 20s. He seemed to be suddenly solid as hell and the shots I did get in it was like he just shrugged them off. Like fighting a bear or an old alligator or something. When it was done, I said something stupid like "I'm gonna get you for that, you wait!" and he said "the day that happens I will shoot you dead." Never forgot it and how his face looked staring down at me.
I felt like a piece of shit for the whole thing but we never talked about it specifically. I have told him since then that I am sorry I was such a handful when I was younger and he just sighed and patted me on the shoulder.
He's old now, and had a stroke last year. Might not be around too much longer as they say strokes come in series and he seems so...frail now. I feel like shit thinking of how I treated him when I was younger. Guy gets married, works two jobs, gets sent overseas and shot at for a year (combat vet) comes home has a kid still works 2 jobs never complaining, no friends, no life, and then his kid treats him like a bitch. I do know that feel. But I can say, I never went for a weapon when fighting pops. Or fighting anyone. I've been in a bunch of fights. I do not feel going for a weapon is something that people do when fighting family, or friends, or even people they just know. But I could be fucked up. No problem, I like sharing opinions on this. This is the way I see it:
Four months is so long that a normal kid would rebel against it no matter what. Best-case scenario, you tell your parents to fuck off and sneak out anyway. Worst case scenario, you get used to your room and it spins a cycle which can turn you into a shut-in.
One thing that can make a kid rebellious is a lack of a sense of pride, or a parent being too nitpicky about behavior for a long period of time. For example, if your father corrects his child's grammar more than three times a day it would probably piss him off and spin him in the direction of, "Yeah, yeah, fuck off Dad."
The only way I'd condone hitting an older teenager is if he hits you first. In that case, knock his ass out. Otherwise, there are better ways to handle a verbal altercation.
Positive feedback sounds like a pussy move, and it is if your child is being outright disrespectful. However, if you praise a child for being smart consistently he usually will become smart. You have to do this at an early stage, but if you do it right he will ask questions nonstop and try to gain your pride and approval.
As a teenager, you want your child to know his parents think he's smart and good. This in combination with not living in the ghetto and teaching him solid morals will do most of the trick. The biggest part, however, is believing that your parents are on your side in the big picture.
If the dynamic is the other way around and the parents are constantly full of criticism/tough love, it sows the seeds of anger and rebellion.
Grounding for 4 months is a reactionary parental move that would create a lot of anger and hopelessness. It's something that a power-hungry parent would do to try to make you think you're not tough shit, because they're alpha.
It's 4 months of not having a conversation and working the main problem out, which was your resentment toward not having enough respect in the first place.
