Basically it means follow the law of the land. If the law says don't stone adulterers but the Bible does, don't stone adulterers. The Koran explicitly states the opposite. It teaches to spread Islam through force if necessary.

In regards to america, christians didn't want to deal with many different christians sects competing over political power so they decided to keep church and state seperate. It might also have to do with the fact that most of the founding fathers didn't give a fuck about religion.
Another reason islam sucks dick with regards to western cultures is the fact that much of islam has been changed over the years by various imams so that they could control the government better. During the "golden age" of islam imams would come up with bullshit reasons to retain whatever much power they had. 90% of sharia law is basically bullshit imams over the years came up with keep theocracy as the best form of government.

None really. The Quran is more explicate in its language leaving less wiggle room for interpretation. If the bible was also to be interpreted literally we would be in a similar position but not quite as bad. The Quran is also less of a religious text and more of a guide to socialist theocracy that conflicts with everything modern western society stands for. Really the failure of Muslim states is more of a demonstration of the inferiority of socialist/theocratic government.

Islam is prescriptive of not just a way of life but a government.
Also, it's less about the fundamental religion and more about what its adherents believe. Muslims tend to be far more fundamentalist than Christians and Jews, and they are much more likely to live by the word of their holy book.

In christianity, faith is more important than ritual, wheras in Islam, the practices are far and away the most important, beyond even law and morality
