You do realize, that for the last 25 years Eastern Europe had on average a 2 to 3 times higher GDP growth than western Europe, right? What's more, when you look at purchasing power index you can see that some of the former soviet block countries have already overtaken some of the western countries (mainly Portugal and Greece). It's a matter of 5 to 10 years until this becomes apparent just from looking at GDP per capita.
