If it's a VEI8 eruption, ash covers a huge portion of the continental US, fucking up our farmland for a while, fucking up a lot of structures and killing a shitload of people. Also spewed into the air are aerosols that reflect sunlight and we get a few years where global temperatures drop to the point there will be quite a few crop failures around the world.

Basically, in a few years there would probably be a few billion people dead.

It'll erupt but every day it doesn't is one closer to us managing it. They already drill holes to reduce pressure in calderas. Now if they just learn to create huge high pressure systems they can drastically reduce the spread of ash.

I just read about this. The guys that were fracking didn't properly seal up the hole, and a pocket of methane climbed up between the outside steel casting and the dirt, eventually making it into the groundwater. It wasn't a -direct- result of fracking, and the 16 families that were affected ended up getting a big settlement from the incident, despite having zero health consequences.

Realistically, probably not as much as people are predicting. It certainly won't be a world-ending catastrophe. The biggest effect it will have will be on US agriculture. The inability to produce food will probably create starvation, most likely for urban and other densely populated areas. Couple million people would die at the most.

I know worst case scenarios are more fun to think about, but this is most likely the boring truth.

Nothing. Yellowstone is a hotspot like Hawaii. Hotspot lava is basalt, which is runny. Your big explosions are from rhyolite, which is thick and doesn't like to flow.

It's just going to dribble like a Hawaiian eruption.

I do not agree that a full blown VEI8 Yellowstone eruption is anywhere near overblown. Look up the year without a summer. That was caused by a much smaller volcano than a full on Yellowstone eruption. The death toll could literally rack up into the billions when all of the climate effects kick in and cause global crop failures.

OTOH, the chances of it erupting during our lifetimes are miniscule, so from that standpoint, it is overblown as a catastrophe.

There's the misconception that humans sink in lava/magma

In reality it's much more dense/heavy than the human body so you'd kind of burn to ash ontop of it
>>
>>72361097
Misleading as fuck

This shows the ash deposit

Ash deposits don't kill you.

The pyroclastic cloud from the eruption would only travel 100-200km's at most.

It would be a serious health hazard for everyone in the US; ash would overload buildings and collapse them. People would suffer respiratory disease, lung damage; you would have to buy and wear masks to protect yourself from the fine particulate dust coating everything.

But it's not like the entire fucking continental US is going to split open and kill everyone. Unless you live within a few hundred kilometers of yellowstone, the initial eruption won't do a fucking thing to you.

it would take several minutes to die after being tossed onto magma.

There's a few reasons for this:

1) Magma is a dense non-newtonian fluid. You'd hit it like concrete, and you won't sink partially for that. The other reason is:

2) You are 70% water. The magma will form a crust as your body splits open like an overcooked frozen burrito and quenches the top layer a bit with your blood and piss and internal fluids.

3) You will burst into flames before even touching the lava. Everything dry on you including clothing, hair, and skin will burst into flames about 40-50 feet from the lava.

4) Your brain will survive the lava for about 20-30 seconds. before the heat causes you to lose consciousness, if the 1-2 minutes of burning, exploding, and pain didn't cause you to pass out already.

It would be somewhat brief, but the pain would be indescribable.

If you want to die quickly and painlessly, get an exit bag and some nitrogen and die of hypoxia. You'll be euphoric and giddy as you drift into a peaceful death.

It destroys a lot of rural predominantly white areas, while leaving Coastal ghettos largely unaffected.
