It's very competitive and takes forever to get hired. I hope you have a squeaky clean past, because the background investigation is very thorough. Post secondary education is mandatory in a lot of departments and highly desired everywhere. Military experience is great.

Pass written.
Pass interview.
Pass psych.
Pass Academy, shooting driving and some sort of defensive tactics.
Get through field training.
The best thing I could have done to prepare was minored in English ar school. Report writing is mostly what you do as a cop.

i've taken 2 polys and the first one i had to fill out a 70 question questionnaire about various things like have you ever raped someone, dled child porn, stolen anything, done drugs, transported drugs, etc. and then they pull some questions out of those- they only ask you like 10 questions total because they have to wait like 30 seconds between asking and they have to ask the question 2-3 times.
the second one he made up some questions based on a packed of questions. again he only asked 10 and they were very similar questions. lots of sex questions and drug questions.

prepare for the physical exam - do not think you are a rambo and can just skate through it like its cool ... they will tell you the requirements WELL IN ADVANCE OF TESTING so just fucking do it
you will be given a written test, which will repeatedly ask you the same questions just worded in a different way, mixed in with some weird ass questions like do you believe in aliens or have you ever stolen anything - don't be a retard, just answer as consistently as you can
you may be given the opportunity to use points to improve your test score but before you do this MAKE SURE YOU READ UP ON THEIR POLICY FOR USING POINTS sometimes it is a one-time deal, and it may be better to save them for when you want to go for a promotion - if you plan on staying at that department for a while
that's about it - the rest is pretty straightforward, if you are considered you'll usually go before a board of commissioners who will do a final interview, unless you pissed off some local pol somehow this will be cake and you are home free

New York only required a HS Diploma to be a town or city cop. To be a State Trooper (WAY higher salary) you have to have a BA/BS. I've met GED beat-cops in Harlem. They don't do the "evil white patriarch" in the ghetto any more, they hire from within those societies so the police are "more relatable". They make very obvious concessions for minorities working in those areas. Most of them are barely capable of reading/writing their own paperwork.
Shameful to say, but the NYPD is full of incompetent retards that ONLY got their job because their skin tone matches the demographics comprising the neighborhoods they work in.

They do MRI's now and interact with people. Certain lobes of the brain are active when someone is lying. It's supposidly 10,000x more accurate than a standard polygraph. I doubt the average jurisdiction has the funding for those tests though.
