Good for them. But these are the last years of "Rasha strong" in space industry.

Space X is the main reason why the cost of launching things in space is rapidly falling and why innovation in this field is going on more and more in the private sector.

Roskosmos is in big trouble.

>>
>>72325643
>exists exclusively due to governmnet contracts
but you're wrong leafy: http://www.spacex.com/missions
>>
>>72325424
The reason the shuttle was shut down was because it was very inefficient.
>>
>>72325973
that's true, rockets are way cheaper and easier to build, though the funds that were removed from the shuttle program were relocated to social issues, or so I read back then iirc.
>>
>>72325424
>>72325973
>>72326108
The shuttle was an overpriced piece of shit that got 14 people killed and had no launch escape systems. It was useless.
If the US had just stuck to developing something cheaper than Saturn I/V for launching Apollo they'd have been much better off.
>>
>>72322720
>>72322930

that thing looks awesome.

" In paper studies, the cost per kilogram of payload carried to low Earth orbit in this way is hoped to be reduced from the current £1,108/kg (as of December 2015),[4] including research and development, to around £650/kg, with costs expected to fall much more over time after initial expenditures have amortised."

HA AHA AHAHA AHAHAHAHAHAAA

they always do this. I stumbled across an Aviation Week from back in the 70s in a storage room at our office. in order to sell the shuttle, they actually claimed that the cost to get a pound in orbit would drop from X thousand dollars to about $25.

HOW DID THAT WORK OUT? not so good. of course, they blamed the utter failure to reduce the cost at all on the military and congress.

I work in the aerospace industry. if you don't lie out your asshole when writing a proposal, you don't get the contract, because everyone bidding against you is lying out their asshole. of course, once you get the contract, it's too late for the customer to complain when you start letting the truth leak out BECAUSE MUH LAUNCH SCHEDULE.

schedule crisis meetings are so surreal you would not believe them.
>>
>>72326345
What were they thinking when building the Shuttle? Was it just politics and if so why did it last so long?
>>
>>72326345
>schedule crisis meetings are so surreal you would not believe them.

Is it true that Elon sets schedules that drives his engineers crazy and often gets postponed?
>>
>>72326667

nasa has always been sorta like the current F35 boondoggle because they intentionally spread the contracts to enough states so that congress will approve anything.

the joke used to be: what is the shuttle for? answer: to go to the space station.

well then, what is the space station for? answer: it's a place for the shuttle to go to.

if we had never put a man in space and had spent those countless billions on science and tech space, we would have accomplished incredible things.

shuttle fanbois like to brag about how man in space was required to fix hubble. fuck, if we had not wasted money on the shuttle we could have launched dozens of hubbles, each far more advanced than the one before.

but, man-in-space is thought to be required to keep bubba interested, so we keep putting humans in space and claiming that they are doing wonderful things that robots cannot do for 1/100th the cost.
>>
>>72326701
>Is it true that Elon sets schedules that drives his engineers crazy and often gets postponed?

probably. I'm actually retired, so I have little current awareness, but I'd bet it has not changed much.
>>

>>
>>72327236

>>
>>72327483

I have no idea, but I'm betting that "two days" estimate turns into two months or more. that was another claim about the shuttle, that it would be so awesome that we would build lots of them and be launching every few days, and the cost would plummet.

the only thing that plummeted was Challenger and the other one that came apart on re-entry.

Russian rockets are used by the US as well. Europe uses the Ariane rocket family quite a bit as well, which is a European rocket family.

And let's not forget that """American""" rockets use Russian rocket engines.

>>72316924

You are retarded. You don't use a giant fucking rocket to get to LEO. Not even the US does that.

The long use of the Soyuz is a testament to its quality. Not only is the Soyuz rocket family extremely reliable, but it's also reasonably cheap and carries a decent weight to LEO, covering the most common payload weights.

>>72317480

Not sure what you're talking about lad. Is that why Russia does most satellite and ISS supply launches, because half of your rockets are circumcised and lack fairings like your penises?

Anyway, the Russians obviously have alternatives for heavy payloads as well, like the Proton-M.

>>72317715
>Space X is the main reason why the cost of launching things in space is rapidly falling and why innovation in this field is going on more and more in the private sector.

People need to stop sucking SpaceX cock. The reason isn't SpaceX specifically, but rather that the ULA monopoly is being broken down.

>>72320804

Kill yourself. All of those flags are European flags because it's an united European space programme.
>>
>>72327633
>I'm betting that "two days" estimate turns into two months or more
No shit. If your manufacturing/QA process is anything like ours (which I have a lot of shit to dump on, working at a design bureau coupled with a factory, but at least it works out most of the time), then you have to bust your ass to prove you're ready to launch to the client, and it takes at least half a month of the thing being stationed at the launch pad alone.

And I can only guess how much time refilling the tanks and replacing external surfaces can take.
>>
>>72325424

No. Shuttle was shut down for all the right reasons. The only issue is that Clinton or Bush Sr. should have done it instead of Bush Jr.

We'd be on Mars now if they'd canned STS in the '90s.

Stuff like this breaks my fucking heart. For years I've had to listen to leftist cucks piss and moan about space exploration as "a waste of resources" because they think it's better to literally throw money at Africa to watch it disappear. They all perpetrate the Progressive Fallacy: The idea that ideas and rights, once gained, can never be lost. So they think we just stay on the same level if we drop everything. But in reality, you have to keep doing something, or you lose the skill you have.

Even the fucking Russians understand that, which is why they're one of the world's leading space powers despite having an economy the size of France's, and a living standard that hasn't improved in half a century.
