Long story short, it's because of Quebec and because a past popular NPD leader (3rd party) Jack Layton died just after the previous election. He was liked very much (especially by Quebec who wanted change back in 2012 iirc). The party managed to get enough votes from Quebec to become the opposition and the Quebec federal party basically vanished because of it. However, randomly, the NPD leader died. He was replaced by some other guy.
I personally suspect that the reason Jack Layton was liked was because he seemed like your grandfather and didn't seem harmful.
People wanted Harper gone basically. They didn't want Trudeau in because ''he's too young'' but also didn't want the new NDP leader Tom Mulcair because he wasn't Jack Layton.
The thing that tipped everything was a propaganda message ad that showed Tom Mulcair giving favors (I think?) or being friendly with Muslims. And Quebec went fucking insane. For some reason, I don't really know why but everyone was talking about how he was shit for liking Muslims despite Trudeau doing almost the same shit.
So, Harper was only liked in Alberta. Everyone else basically voted proportionally, and Quebec voted in mass for Trudeau because they didn't want Harper or Tom Mulclair.
And that's basically why we have Trudeau for four years. Because Quebec hates Muslims.
