How many generations of pure doubling can you do before the numbers become higher than the existing population? It's historically under 10. Which means we're interrelated on some level. Now some lineages die off without reproducing, or have all their descendants killed. This narrow the "cone" of possible ancestors even more.
Therefore you must find bottlenecks as you look back in history.
Just like we all have a "mitrochondrial eve" female ancestor, that is the last oldest universal mother from which we all stem. Not because she was the only person alive, but because selection has killed all her competition.
If you look at cheetah populations you can see what happens if the bottleneck is too extreme and close in time. They have very little genetic diversity and this means they're all so interrelated (because at one point close in time their total population was very small) that they get genetic diseases.
Or take a country like Pakistan where marrying close relatives is considered okay. Or the "blue bloods" of royal Europe who were so interbred you can see their deformity in their royal portraits.
