They aren't generally willing to go through more than one step to make something, so they won't produce the tools necessary to make bricks or tiles. Once they have the mud the best they can think to do is just slap it on the walls.

They don't really understand how a structure is supported so they can't use their imagination to think up taller buildings, modular designs, more efficient floorplans, etc. They just do what comes naturally and NEVER examine it. It has never occurred to make of them to make a square out of wood instead of just sticking in the ground in a rough hut shape.
They solve problems in the most direct way possible even if it takes more work or provides a worse result. They aren't willing to take extra steps, so they don't plan anything.

I'm always happy when architects incorporate old history into new buildings rather than tearing them down. Those are the two oldest houses in Washington DC. The building actually extends behind them, it's just the facades they've kept standing, but still.
The Golden Gate Bridge is similar, if you look at the south end there's actually a second small arch bridge to go over a civil war fort (Fort Point). It was first built in 1776 and then expanded during the war into a huge brick structure. Wonderful views of the bridge from a unique perspective, but lots of wind.
