Yeah they said that they wanted to test the limits of the 4th reactor. Basically a bunch of scientists came in and told the guards that they would receive payment if they let them. The guards were all young men in their 20s str8 out of army and didn't know a thing about this shit. The soviets tried to cover It up by building a YYUGE wall made out of cement, but it only worsened.

I was 10yo when Chernobyl exploded, can remember the constant news footage of the ariel view of the glowing core and Boron being dumped into it, also when the helicopter pilot was overcome by radiation crashed into the reactor

Flaws in design such as:
- positive void coefficient (as water cooling fuel rods starts boiling, it causes reactor power to increase)
- graphite tips of shutdown rods (causes reactor power spike during insertion under certain conditions)
- lack of containment structure
- ability to manually override essential safety systems
Poor safety culture
- lack of questioning attitude, knowlegeable stuff was too afrarid to say no supervisors pushing to proceed, despite the fact that supervisors were from fossil fuel industry with little to know knowlege of nuclear.
- pressure to complete test on schedule, despite the fact that after original test window was missed and reactor got poisoned by iodine and zenon, it was no longer possible to proceed safely untill few days later. But then test would have to be cancelled for a year, and some heads would roll, so, boom.
No question that this was a major disaster, however the consequences of it are greatly exaggerated.
