In 2016 you can play CS:GO, Dota 2, SC2, LoL, CoD and Hearstone professionally. Most of these games are degenerate as fuck compared to true e-sports like Quake, Broodwar or to a lesser extent CS 1.6
Unfortunately what gets played is dictated by other factors than how viable the game is for competition.

Instead of focusing on the pro scene, they catered to players. Sounds like a good idea but it's actually an awful one. The pro scene is what drives the players to keep playing, despite 99% of players never getting there, it breeds discussion and attracts more players.
Also, by having a rotation of champions each patch that are "op" or "strong" and "weak" you vary game play widely; especially between seasons.
Dota developers caused their game to stagnate and the players are shitting in fury over leagues success.

Dota, games become repetitive, because of the belief of a "stable" game of "balance" rather than "come up with something that works" and "build your own play style". There are two main things for a game, attract new players, and keep them.

I don't want to white-knight it, but it really takes just as much dedication, training and technical and even physical (hand movement / hand eye coordination) skill as a real sport.
It's obviously not as high-test as football (not handegg, fat Americans) or hockey, but it is still more testosterone than gay shit like golf. If gold is allowed to be called a real sport, than e-sports definitely is a real sport too.

Personally, I hold e-sports in much higher regard than old sports. I spend approximately 3-4 hours a week watching Dota 2; many of my friends play at high levels.
It is a much more entertaining and cerebral endeavor. The amount of memorization, combinations of compositions and abilities, and reaction time required is very intense.
I don't see why anyone would go wild over overpaid manchildren kicking a ball around in this day and age.

It's exploiting the interest of the general populace in a popular, mainstream game for profit. The peak of capitalism and the free market by sucking wallets dry, freeing them from their owners.
I played street fighter on a "competitive" (not professional) level, won several thousand dollars over the span of a year going to various tournaments near me. Plus all the gambling was insane, betting was really rampant.
I played smash for a little while but the tournaments for that are boring as fuck with 2 or 3 top tier players shitting all over everyone else, and most of the tournaments are for shitty gift prizes which are worth nothing.
I got into league back pre-s1, I used to play DOTA back in the days of wc3 but not well or anything, so I played league a bit, and since I wasn't retarded and had a foothold i'd done well for myself and got on a small college team, and as it grew in popularity through s1-2 we contacted riot and helped them start the college league of legends program, and we all ended up being paid pretty handsomely for bringing it to their attention. I'm no millionaire, and i'm definitely not rich but it put a few thousand dollars in my bank account that weren't there before.
Stopped playing "competitively" though, because in reality it's a sham, for all games, it's super rigged. From fighting games where stage layouts are favored for one player with things like light and speaker placement, headphone quality differing, and more, to league of legends where, in my day there were really no checks and preventions for screenwatching, so everyone just looked up, or had their phone out to get texts from family members watching in the audience. I'm sure shit's different now, but I also don't have 20 hours a day to dedicate to playing like koreans, so it's not an option even if I wanted to get back into it.
They're not degenerate, they're the furthest thing from it. If you can follow trends, and predict which games will be popular, you can make big bucks.
