If I had a working teleporter do you think I'd tell you about it?

No I'd just come fuck your mom while you sleep.
>>
>>72091955
Nope. They die every time. That's why some of the characters refused to do it.
>>
>>72091955
No it would never work.

It is a plot device in a tv show.

You become disintegrated, you die. Then the machine makes a copy of you.

Yes. It will happen in 5 years when everything will be like Back to the Future 2.

you don't have teleportation in New Zealand?! lol its current year, ffs.

How could you be alive after being completely disintegrated?

It's actually a possibility, much like string theory and alternate dimensions.

Think of it this way. Yesterday, you may have been hit by a bus, but it seems like it never happened, because there were billions of different redo scenarios that you don't see.

iirc they already managed teleportation although at photon level, and that was 10-15 years ago, it's gonna take a long as while to move from photons to living organisms, and not just killing and duplicating them, but real teleportation

entanglement based teleportation? yeah, theoretically, it just creates a copy of you at the destination. then it deletes (or disassembles into dust) the original at your starting position. if being disassembled into dust sounds like dying to you, then yes, you would be dead.

however there would be another guy just like you at your destination.

The teleporter was originally a way to avoid having the Enterprise actually land on planets, because that would have apparently blown their sfx budget for the season with every landing.
>>
>>72091955

An exact duplicate would be the same person from a scientific standpoint. But this is more philosophical because the original experiences destruction and the copy doesn't, so there's always a disconnect that prevents a perfect copy.
Due the the way the human brain works you've already 'died' and been replaced with a copy thousands and thousands of times OP, any time you've slept or otherwise been unconscious.
everything is possible, stop limiting yourself, if they did it with photons am sure by the time we/if achieve interstellar travel we have moved from photon to several cubic centimiter containers or something similar in size; Imagine small distance wormholes will be able to allow you to teleport without being killed and replaced

if they make it in the form of small wormholes at short to medium distances, i guess you would actually be in one piece "teleported" and not disintegrated(killed) and replaced
>>
>>72092321

That's a facet of certain 'quantum immortality' theories which are popular. An individual point of observation (life/consciousness) is always preserved down the infinite paths they possibly could survive and continue observing in.

Bear in mind that observation has no need for your happiness or comfort. Imagine what strange twists of fate could result in you being an eternal observer for all of time.

You would be a fool to actually go into a teleporter. The thing that comes out the other side may look like you, talk like you, think like you, but it's not you. You have ceased to exist.

>>
>>72092961
You were not fooling anyone when you were spending all that time with that "traveler" fruit cake...
>>
>>72091955
In a Portal manner maybe. In a "you get destroyed and reassembled" way I don't think it's possible since it violates the uncertainity principle and I don't think anyone would want to try dying anyway, even then you'd still be limited by lightspeed because the information would have to be sent that way barring some quantum fuckery.

I read somewhere of a third way that'd involve localy modifying a physical constant to increase the probability of you being in location B instead of location A but I don't really know enough about it to say much.

Teleportation requires a human to be split in atoms, atoms to be scanned and then re assembled at the other end. This kills the human.

Now the true question: When you are deconstructed, you die ... when you are re assembled, do you retain your consciousness ? Your personality?

Or do you die and the re assembled person is just a clone of you with your most basic of mannerisms?
>>
>>72092430

so then every 10 years that your body replaces every living cell in a way you are suicidal
#logic
>>
>>72096314
But it doesn't replace everything at once, does it? It does it cell by cell. Have I died every time a single cell has died and been replaced? Does a herd of sheep, flock of birds, hell, entire species go extinct purely because a single individual out of the many dies and is replaced?
>>
>>72091955
It wouldn't matter. If the new copy is indistinguishable from the original then it is the original.

>>72096896

There would be some unlikely combination where their teletrones and DNA or whatever holds up longer, less cancer etc but probably 140 would be the max even with infinite luck

also brings about the metaphysical questions of your soul. what happens to it? Does it go with your new "you"? Does it leave when you die? Will the new "you" no longer have a soul?

Why would it be the most basic of mannerisms? Either the brain is copied in its state where the various braincells are firing... the pattern of conciousness (which is what we are) is either copied or not.

So basically though it's impossible to kill yourself. If you are determined to do it you will simply survive with lock-in syndrome and live for 100 more years hooked to a machine and you can only move your eyes up and down
>>
>>72091955
>Also would it really be you on the other side?

Startrek's? There was an ep where Barclay had serious problems with the whole idea, and he was completely aware and confirmed to have continuity of consciousness in the teleporter stream.

Also, the most absolutely fucked up shit happens to people who take shuttles too much.

No, you don't die, you fucking morons. You are literally being transported on a molecular level to another location. Goddamn.
>>
>>72101815
how to preserve the brain functions when you literally destrioy it to a molecular level?
>>
>>72102163
because in the end of the day you are just a bunch of atoms...

tho you have to know the speed of location of each other to achieve a true teleportation
and that means you would have a decent understanding of time itself for this..
>>
>>72101815
why not just use new molecules to rebuild the person?

You could just shoot the remaining person in the face to prevent countless clones running around, seems more energy efficient.
