Of course the clerics are the best for this as you can't say they are only 'Christians by culture/name/whatever'. Jesuits are a religious order so they would also be good, and many are clerics as well. Well, as many first attempts it failed horribly. People took advantage of peoples faith and enslaved, morally and physically, to increase their wealth and influence.
Catholizism in gereral survived because people couldn't read. It took a Luther to translate and reinterprete the bible.
You can see the same thing happen right now in islam. Sandniggers literally get an ideology shoved in their mouth.
Now, catholizism has evolved, mainly because it had to when luther translated the bible. People just didn't fall for indulgence anymore.
But after all that mistreatment people still believed in god. After the enlightenment people still believed in god and even after a somewhat sound theory of kosmology and evolution they still believe in god, even though those theories might as well be considered facts. Now they might be wrong, as theories can be, but if they are wrong they are wrong in a pretty good way, like newtons mechanics.
Well I don't think those people are stupid, I just think they can find hope and peace in religion they wouldn't be able to find otherwise. If they find it I am totally happy for them.
What's more disturbing is the indoctrination of little kids by religions, but that's another topic.
So if you find happiness in religion go for it.
