If you're looking at Infantry Reserve, it's not a bad choice. You have to do 6 weeks of basic training or something? I'm not sure exactly how working hours are arranged, but you need to work something like 40 hours a year or something. I'm pretty sure scheduling your time is flexible. There are guys who work with us (specialised work) on a 'reserve contract', but effectively work full time. So I know there's flexibility.
For permanent positions in Auckland we have Airforce (Whenuapai), Navy (Devonport) or SAS (Papakura)

My recurve has the option of various draw weights on the limbs. This means I can shoot up to my tolerance without having to change everything about my setup, or buy a new, unfamiliar bow.
I've seen people using longbows for field shooting, and they miss as often as hit. it's my understanding that medieval archers wouldn't use them for hunting any more than you'd use a broadsword to pick your teeth.
