>What's happening?
Tomorrow, a major severe weather outbreak will take place across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Violent tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds are all anticipated tomorrow afternoon and evening. Emergency management teams and storm spotters are already in place across four states in anticipation of this significant weather event.

>Who's effected?
The Storm Prediction Center has placed nearly 500,000 square miles under risk for severe storms. The following cities are under a "significant risk" for tornadoes and violent storms: San Antonio, Austin, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita, and Lincoln. Approximately 45,000,000 people are at risk.

>When is this happening?
The storms begin tomorrow afternoon around 2pm CDT (3pm EDT), and will last through the night.

>How can I stay up to date?
Here's a list of resources to keep you to date in real time:

not much would happen I think
plenty of skyscrapers endure F5 hurricanes,
those winds are persistent and can last hours, while being just as strong

a tornado would most likely lose speed hitting a tall enough building, they only really form in open spaces where the wind has nothing to stop it

Tornadoes come from the mesocyclone inside a Supercell storm. This rotating inner structure of the storm is much higher than any sky scraper.

Maybe it's time you read about something before you post.

I'm in Texas, and I was in a car when a tornado touched down right next to us, looped over a neighborhood, and hit us directly.

It was pretty spoopy by interesting at the same time. Thankfully it was a really weak tornado, ended up only pelting us with shingles.
>>
Why do tornadoes NEVER hit on the weekend when I'm not working? Seriously what the fuck.

Oklahoma City here. We get both lots and bad. We also get lots of tornados. Once seems to get hit more than other cities. Quick tip... if the clouds get dense af, if they all seem to as one drop slowly to where they're nearly to the horizon, and if then the sky turns green get the fuck underground cause you gonna die.

Most of the time thunderstorms are pretty cool here. The lightning is cool as shit and the thunder is louder here than anywhere else along I35. Last storm though, one blast was scary louder than normal; way louder than normal's super loud. That shit reverberated for 60 seconds afterward, the sound I guess echoing back and forth from house to house.

I really for realsies totally shat my pants... I work outside.
>>
>>72082946
I live in California, obviously not in tornado area, but I've noticed that the weather is usually nicer and more temperate on the weekend.

I legitimately believe there is a loose correlation between weather patterns and traffic. Highways create their own little wind tunnels which I believe helps stir up weather. When that drops significantly over the weekend I think everything kind of stagnates and makes for calmer and nicer weather.
>>
>>72083459
You are only at risk for F5 tornadoes if you are stupid enough to live in Moore or Bridge Creek. God seems to hate those communities
>>
>>72083525
It makes me sad because Moore is nice as fuck with literally no BAD part of town. It's white throughout and really clean, yet it always gets hit

Well I should clarify, I'm on my way to becoming an air traffic controller, but my education includes 3 types of piloting ground school and I've gone flying in a 172 once before. Pilots have to be meteorologists and ATCs now have to be able to know everything pilots know (sans specifics on their specific planes).

Is piloting stressful? Yeah kinda. Flying airliners requires a fuck ton of knowledge and experience but the national airspace system is designed to keep pilots from having to bare a lot of the burden when it comes to flying. Takeoff and landing are the most critical phases of flight and that's where the technical knowledge comes in. At the same time, ATCs disallow planes from taking off in too hazardous conditions.

Being a controller is much more stressful than being a pilot though, by far. It's one of the most stressful jobs in existence. ATCs are responsible for every plane in their sector and at a moment's notice they have to know where each plane is, what it's doing, and be ready to accommodate any change that may arise. Each plane is only in their sector for about 15-30 minutes at a time so in a given couple of hours a controller might have controlled 50-80 different planes.

I'm waiting on my security clearance to get approved before I go to the FAA academy. I'm tentatively offered a job so I don't have any real world experience yet but my schooling required me to have close to 100 hours of simulation training and there were some ridiculously hard situations. Not only do you have to control planes safely but you have to do it legally and the NAS rule book is meticulous and dry, but at the same time you have to be able to recall every applicable entry in it or else your supervisor immediately relieves you of your shift and you get a penalty.

>>

>>
>>72084140
Thanks. It really is my passion. I work great under stress so I think I'd be a great asset. Some people literally just don't possess the mental fortitude to do it and I'm anxious to prove myself. Plus being able to tell pilots what to do makes your penis feel huge. Pilots get all of the glory in the mainstream media but it's really controllers who do most of the work on the day to day. We may not get all of the accolades that pilots get but at the end of the day both pilots and controllers know that pilots ask ATCs for permission and controllers allow or disallow it.
>>
People who want to commit suicide: for the love of god, get a GoPro and put it on your head when you jump into the twister. You will literally be contributing to both science and the internet.
