In order to answer what went wrong you have to have consensus on what getting it “right” was supposed to look like. What were the goals of the Iraq war? To bring western democracy to a region and culture that hasn’t internalized those values? In that case the project was doomed from the start. If, however, the goal was simply to set up another US forward operating base to project power in the region, then the mission was at least somewhat successful.
