OP, I think Japan is a great nation.
First of all, it's one of the oldest contiguous societies in existence. Europe, forget about it, USA, Australia, Canada, mere children compared to Japan.
Secondly, your people are solid. A bit weird, but solid. I worked with many Japanese in the American auto industry. Most of them were only here for a year at a time, and barely spoke English if at all. But they were the best and smartest workers in the factory. If I had my own company, and had the choice, I'd hire nothing but Japanese.
Third, your history is fantastic. The shoguns, the emperors, the glory - it's much more interesting than Western history.
And finally, look at where you are now. True enough, your economy is currently in a bit of a downspin, but that won't be permanent. You are innovators, and inventors, and creators, and you will rebound.
If all the world didn't look at what happened at Fukushima and stand in awe - Japanese workers continuing to do their duty, knowing it was probably a death sentence - that is the world's fault, not Japan's.
