The goal of car bombs wasn't the death of civilians, but economic damage. IRA usually telephoned ahead the explosions, so the civilians could evacuate. About 10.000 bombs exploded during the conflict, but just a couple hundred of civilians died by bombs.

I'm not going to defend the Omagh bombing. That was awful. The most beautiful thing is no one but the most hardened psychopathic republican would.
But the British state they the IRA fought against continues to support the Army that shot 14 innocents dead in Derry. 26 shot, 14 dead, with absolutely no provocation and the British government did absolutely nothing for years, even now no one has gone to prison for it.
