I bought into it hard awhile back, it's very educational in terms of understanding social behavior, speech, the basics of women and understanding the way the world works.

Look at any group of friends that you have. Typically, there will be somebody you could easily describe as the "alpha male" of the group. He's the guy that the others follow, simple as that. When he says he wants to go somewhere or do something, everyone else does too. He's charismatic, be that because of his looks, his confidence, his humour, his money, or any combination of the above.
Generally, that guy will have a girlfriend who is objectively attractive, and the fact is that she is with him because of his social status. Not on a grand, global scale (although I guess if you mix with high-society types that could be true as well), but simply out of the groups of people that they see on a day-to-day basis. She's the alpha female. She's hotter than the other girls, and she knows it, that's why she's picked herself the alpha male.
Then, as per the system in a wolf pack, the beta males are all the other guys, and the beta females are all the other girls. So while this hierarchy is usually pretty easy to observe in social groups, this idea that "in order to get laid, you need to be alpha" is absolutely retarded. The alpha male pairs up with the alpha female, and the betas then pair off with each other down the line.
What the PUA crowd call a "beta male" is actually, in the terminology that we apply to animal packs, what is known as an "omega". They usually can't hunt (crippled, sickly, etc.), or have committed some major no-no like killing a fellow member of the pack. There's a single breeding pair of alphas. One alpha male, one alpha female.
If any other male attempts to breed with the alpha female, he will be attacked by the alpha male, and very often by some of the other males as well. Likewise, if another female attempts to breed with the alpha male, the alpha female will attack her.
The only way any other animal gets to breed wit a pack alpha is by challenging the alpha of its own gender and winning the fight, thus becoming the new alpha.
This is extremely similar to the way people organise themselves and act when "power couples" experience disruptions to their relationship, obviously with less violence in more civilised societies.
