Is it time to panic?

There's a serious storm system gearing up that's been talked about on the radio for about a week now.

In addition to introducing a last minute "tax-free emergency supply-buy" weekend in Texas, FEMA dropped this little gem last week:
http://youtu.be/GsjUfdaW67k

The tinfoil hat in me remembers the FEMA camps too, wonder if they're what this was for. Is this global warming? Is this the beginning of the end?

It's kind of interesting how Dallas and Ft. Worth are inside of a high-risk tornado zone (not just for this storm, but in general), but have almost entirely avoided any direct hits.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma City is in a similar risk-zone, but it has gotten nailed regularly since the late-90's.

We can conclude from this that Dallas will probably be fine and that OKC will be leveled.

Dallas-Fort Worth has a strange smog / humidity safety net thing called "The Cap".

The cap has a high possibility of breaking up during this storm system.

Should be quite the storm system with a solid tornado threat from northern Texas through Oklahoma into central Kansas.

Shear values aren't necessarily impressive though from the surface up for both the NAM and GFS so that might suppress any type of significant tornado outbreak.

However I'd still stay tuned because the RAP models coming in late Monday into Tuesday morning should give meteorologists and the SPC/NWS a better idea of the threat overall. With such a strong negatively tilted trough and upwards of 5000 J/kg^-1 of CAPE there is ample instability to drive the potential for violent and long-lived tornadoes.

7/10, this looks like it could be the "severe weather outbreak" of the year potentially.

If helicity values come in over 300 m^2 s^-2 (0-1km layer) from the higher resolution convective models Tuesday morning it could be devastating, especially considering the storms will fire right along the dryline which will be near several large cities (Oklahoma City, Wichita, maybe Dallas). Happening potential is there.

SPC just came out with their convective outlook for Tuesday and have upgraded the threat level from "Enhanced" to "Moderate". This typically means there is the potential for violent tornadoes as well as 2"+ hail and 80mph winds. So as the system approaches it seems to be further gaining strength and forecaster confidence is increasing.

If they upgrade the threat to "high" (which they may do tomorrow, they almost never do that for a day 2 outlook), that would mean it is very likely there will be several very large, violent, long-lived tornadoes. If you're in the pink or red hashed areas on the map you should be on high alert.
>>
>>71991090
I read an article about that in the paper too. The weather stations are afraid of "crying wolf" and pushing fear so much that people won't pay attention, but these could be really serious storms.

Missoura here, live just outside Kansas City.
Literally nothing is happening. If something does happen, we are on top of our game. Even before Joplin and other shit happening, we do weekly tornado drills. Been that way since we've had sirens, I'd imagine.
Also, storms like this happen every couple years or so. Worst case scenario is another flyover bumsville like Joplin gets rekt.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama nignog who survived April 27th, 2011 here. Tornado conditions index says very low risk. April 26th however, seems more likely for a good storm.

I'm in missery, and tornadoes are rare. Maybe once or twice a year, there will be a touch down in the viewing area (Kansas City), and every decade or so one nearby.
Basically, hobbit homes are just impractical insurance for extremely unlikely events. Floods tend to kill more people, so that's also why holes dont work well too.

Looks spot on. I think the more interesting part of this storm will be the wind associated with it as it moves eastward late in the evening into the overnight hours. If it forms a derecho there could be winds along the initial front that reach 80mph or faster from Kansas City and eastward, that would reek some widespread damage.

You can't predict a tornado more than maybe 20 minutes before it happens. These predictions here are not saying there will be tornadoes, just that if the right conditions happen, they will work in junction with ones the NWS have predicted and could potentially happen. Most schools also have shelters set up along with yearly drills. The cities also are legally required to test loud air raid sirens every Wednesday or so. Top all that with tornadoes being fucking neat asf and anyone scared of them being a fucking pussy, then schools would laugh if you choose to stay, and would doubt you if you request later on.

Tl;dr: No.

Ask a resident of a supernaturally protected town that lies between two rivers. The only tornadoes we experience "in" the city is at the edge of city boundaries where the two rivers no longer surrounds the town together. The Native American tribes have told of our guardianship but it won't last if we don't take care of our rivers. Guess when the tornadoes have reached our city? When our rivers were at their most polluted.

Stupid farmers and their fertilizers ruined our previous resource for clean water and recreation. Our city used to use them now we have to outsource our water and can't swim or fish in the rivers like our grandparents used to.
>"Regulating dangerous chemicals from destroying our resources is socialism! Don't tread on me! The free market will fix it! Private property owners will take care of the environment better than any kind of government intervention. Never mind that what we do on our private property effects everybody in the city."
Idiots.

What the hell? It's still a pretty general statement. In no way was that guy revealing any significant info about him.

If there was an autism board, I would redirect you there.

Did it hit Nebraska?

There was some lightning and it rained for like 15 minutes then i fell asleep

if so, 0/10, my dog pisses harder than it rained, and I didn't even hear any thunder.

The Happening of Happenings will come in your life time. Don't get impatient, because you'll wish for these days when those days come.

If I had a storm shelter I wouldn't care, but I don't so I'm pretty spooked. I have this feeling I'm gonna die to an F5. Feels bad.

Weather channel hypes everything up, but the NWS SPC, which never hypes, is also freaking out.. so chances are it's going to be nuts. I've never seen the SPC use the words "/giant hail/" and "/violent tornadoes/" ever in the 5 years that I've been reading their reports. They've also never given a moderate or high risk sig sever area 2 days in advance. It's usually a few hours in advance.

hold on to your butts oklahoma

Tuesday afternoon / early evening.

It will be hundreds of supercells. If you don't live in the red / pink area then it doesn't matter for you.
>>
>>71988847
OKC has a much higher risk for strong violent supercells and tornadoes than Dallas.

Dallas is usually well southeast of the dry line.
