They think the votes of one will go to the other, but their supporters aren't that enthusiastic nor obedient, they either won't vote or vote for Trump. There is no way this strategy won't give Trump higher scores, there's no way it could give him lower scores.

I have a feeling that Rubio will hand over his delegates to a Rubio-Kasich ticket, so I wouldn't underestimate this strategy. Especially if Kasich tells his voters to vote for Cruz in Indiana.
I hope Trump gets enough delegates despite all of this, but with none of the candidates wanting to be his VP, it becomes hard for him to get out of the convention as the nominee.

Well, it appears that the GOP's priority at this point is averting a Trump nomination. They've already shown that the party elites are willing to sacrifice the presidential election. If trump wasn't running the show he would have done well, as someone who has lived in ohio most my life, there is a lot they aren't saying about Kasich (basically all his big accomplishments are him sweeping shit under the rug and we won't be hit by immediate repurcussions but are seeing benefits.
