Jews are much smarter than average, probably about 8-12 IQ points higher than the white gentile average. Your average Jew is more capable at outcompeting most other ethnic groups on a brute individual basis. Furthermore, he is endowed with an environmental advantage as consequence of the feedback between race and culture (in a purely cognitive sense), and he benefits from inheriting a better socio-economic condition from his family.
Whites of equivalent aptitude are less likely to have parallel upbringings and socialization.
Jewish overrepresentation is probably more complex than this, especially in its starker manifestations. But the fact that Jews perform well in almost any cognitively demanding stratum of society is probably just the cognitive advantage. You need to be extraordinarily bright to compete in the highest echelons of science, philosophy, literature, economics, etc etc. Jewish overrepresentation absolutely generalizes, there must be a manifold explanation at the root of it that is resilient to the idiosyncrasies of particular industries and professions
