But it's not a contradiction, actually. There are two things primarily behind that statistic.
Unfortunately, pit bulls are usually the breed of choice for abusive shitty owners that should never have a dog in the first place. Because they are big and muscular and have this mystique or reputation, so unfortunately relatively high numbers of pit bulls ARE abused and that skews the stats.
The other thing is that they are simply deadlier. The way they fight, and they way they are built, when they DO bite someone, someone is going to be very hurt. Whereas when lesser breeds bite someone it's probably just a scratch.
So if you want a human analogy, think of them as the traditional gentle-hearted giant character. Nicest guy around, but tends to get abused because of it, and can really mess you up if somehow he goes of on you.

I ALWAYS put one of those anti-biting face things on the dog whenever I'm dealing with a Pit Bull.
One of their main characteristics is to attack suddenly, literally without any warning.
They basically go from a calm dog to a killer dog in the blink of an eye.
This is one of the main reasons why they get such a (deserved) bad fame. Most people will back off if they notice they are dealing with an aggressive dog, but Pit Bulls will look non-aggressive before it bites, therefore fooling peope.
They are also hard wired to go for the neck and not let go. Just take a pit bull and watch it play with other dogs, it does it differently, instead of playful bites and running around, it will bite the other dog's neck and put it down.
I've had many patients which were dogs with ripped neck skin and muscle from just playing with pit bulls.
Although I love dogs and have two (a mutt and a border collie), I say Pit Bulls are shit dogs. It's a breed that should be banned.

No, you don't. In my dealings with dogs I've had to pry the mouth of more than one pitbull. It isn't all that much stronger than any similar sized dog.
Pitbulls come in two varieties. Retarded incest mating mentally unstable and show quality. Because of their popularity within underground fighting circles and among degenerates you can't just trust any guy off the street to buy from. And almost never a rescue unless you are a vet or extremely experienced in handling dangerous animals.
The only place you should get a pitbull(or AmStaff) is from a show winning stud/bitch line. All AKC/UKC papers included. Idk, my gf has two pitbulls and they're really sweet. The only problems I've ever seen with pit bulls are in fighting other dogs and tearing them apart. Even then, you're supposed to clamp your arm around their neck and beat them in the nose to snap them out of fighting mode. All dogs may attack a person based on the individual dog's personality, but when a pit bull does it it's so much worse.
I feel like German Shepherds are probably the best dogs, just for being smart enough to assess people and other dogs in order to get along with everyone.

Because dogs reflect their owners. Rottweilers were actually the nigger dog of the 1990s until they moved on to a truly savage breed. You probably would have heard of a lot of Rottweiler attacks 20 years ago.
Though I do believe different breeds have different thresholds for aggressive behavior, how the owner trains and treats the dog is as much of a factor as the breed. An abusive or incompetent owner could turn a Labrador Retriever into a monster. There are reasons many pet stores and pet forums will tell you a breed or species of something that should not be handled by someone getting their first dog, cat, snake, chinchilla, centipede or whatever. Pit Bulls should probably not be banned outright, but given their nature, breeding and owning them should probably be severely restricted so they aren't in the hands of niggers and trailer trash.
