Apart from this, the reason Sparta faded into oblivion after they were annexed by the Romans since they were pretty insignificant, in that nothing interesting happened in Sparta apart from gay dudes working their whole life to be warriors, and having little intelligence or creating anything apart for shit for Athens to deal with.
Athens, being a pretty good direct democracy produced some of the best minds of history, who even 2500 later are still some of the framework for philosophy. Arguably the three best philosophers who only in the last 300 years have truly been argued against came from Athens, (Plato, Aristotle and Socrates).
