At one point I think his wife inherited slaves, and even that was on the stipulation that they be freed after five years.
He had expressed earlier in life that slavery was moral for the black man, but then some years later other diary entries/letters he wrote he said that he felt slavery was immoral.
After the war he wrote something to the effect of: "If we emancipate all the slaves and immediately involve them in the political process through voting, we will generate great resentment among the white population, and the slaves, having no formal education, will be ignorant of how the process works, how laws and politics work, and will be easily exploited by politicians for their own purposes."
Basically, he thought the South/Government needed to engage in a large campaign of black/former-slave education before granting them full voting rights.
I'm sure his sentiment would greatly offend most people today, but I dare say he was proven right by history. Mind you, he was also against universal suffrage as a whole, feeling that extending the vote to every man would lower the quality of political discourse and more easily allow the corrupt to climb the political ladder by lying to the voting populace.
