For my money is would be U.S. Special Forces, and the other asymmetrical warfare special operations units in other first world countries.

The Highest form of combat was the kind practised in Bronze-Age Greece.

The Greatest War ever known was fought between the Trojans and the Achaens. Thousands of warriors would line up shoulder to shoulder and through the strength of their will and of their sinews would be victorious or be routed.

Champions would arise who would slay dozens at a time. Until finally they would engage a worthy foe in single combat One would be victorious, the other dwell in the Elysian fields. The Glory of War so great that the Gods themselves took sides.

Finally through their cunning the Achaens destroyed Troy and returned home to build Western Civilisation.

definitely ancient naval warfare. Slaves under the decks rowing for power while you ram at full speed into other ships hoping yours don't break apart? arrows showering overhead while you throw explosives and POTS FILLED WITH SNAKES at the enemy? I mean you're so close to them you can see their faces and blood and sweat, and if you fall in the drink you just drown. It's a time of men being fucking men, this is the hardest shit around.

> As well as digging their own tunnels, the Tunnelling companies of the Royal Engineers had to listen out for enemy tunnellers. On occasions miners accidentally dug into the opposing side's tunnel and an underground fight took place.

Use of accurate distant firing systems, such as land or ship based artillery. Operators use laser range finders to accurately relay grid coordinates to indirect firing platforms who are back with the main body, such as on a forward operating base or in a naval patrol group. Operators can through these methods rain down thousands of pounds of heavy munitions on an enemy position. Just reconned a taliban fort and have solid intel there are no civilians in sector? Drop a JDAM on it and continue with your day.

Napoleonic era warfare was objectively the best. Spectacular uniforms, cavalry was still important, the fate of nations was decided in a single, decisive battle, troops were disciplined and performed sophisticated manoeuvres and artillery wasn't developed enough to utterly dominate the battlefield.

>>
>>71964320
interesting isnt the most effective in some cases

chemical warfare has the most promise of being interesting but chemical weapons used out in the open are very ineffective. they disperse rapidly

or the idea of poisoning a water supply using a protein blocker which is super lethal in a quantity that isnt visible to the naked eye but in a practical sense its a waste of resources since you could just carpet bomb a city and do the same damage in less time and no need to have soldiers get behind enemy lines on foot

the future of it is more promising since obama admitted to war crimes being committed during his administration and the previous. it opens the door for every one to ignore old rules about warfare. if america can why cant every one else. also if you argue the usage of chemical allows the usage of nuclear against you why wasnt asaad nuked?

think of it . seeding clouds with modified V2 rockets bought on the black market and entire nations loosing crops to soil ph changes.

yea no "think of the children" argument works when the target isnt even people

They say it can be addictive. Really makes one wonder what the cause of PTSD is. Maybe there's a gene that governs people's ability to adapt to combat.

Although PTSD probably is just more a side-effect of Western decadence and laws preventing soldiers from letting off steam. I doubt the legionnaires that followed Caesar around Gaul or the Phalangites who followed Alexander across Asia got PTSD.

>I doubt the legionnaires that followed Caesar around Gaul or the Phalangites who followed Alexander across Asia got PTSD

Ancient soldiers would have felt some form of PTSD for sure. Being far away from home, nearly starving or freezing to death some nights, experiencing the chaos of battle and watching friends die in awful ways, taking on all kinds of wounds and broken bones. It would wear on anybody.

PTSD only really started being noticed in WWI. Sitting in a trench with your foot rotting off while getting constantly shelled by massive artillery barrages, covered in intensely poisonous gas that fucks your shit up, and getting your head blown off if you sit up too much is just a little bit more of an experience than standing in a line with a boomstick that is pretty much guaranteed to miss firing it at another crowd of dudes with equally inaccurate boomsticks.

Not to mention the development of psychology and understanding of the human mind helped diagnose what was probably just considered anxiety in the past.

>-Phalanx vs Phalanx

this, at least in Greek combat

It was a relatively gentlemanly although impersonal affair with few losses between city states. The upper/upper middle class were Calvary. Middle classes were heavy/medium infantry with armor passed down for generations bearing family/tribal crests and symbols. Men at the front pierce and stab, if the formation moves forward then enemy wounded are euthanized by rear rows.

Most of the time there was no real victory, just showing you had to balls to fight and all was well.

Nothing beats the strategy and tactics used by the Roman legions. The formations were ingenious and each legionary acted as a cohesive unit almost as if they were cells making up a organism. Ballistas and trebuchets could bring down the mightiest of walls and kill tens of a soldiers from hundreds of yards away. Paved roads were built to transport troops and supplies effectively.
