Elon Musk marches forward with his push to end human driving. Are you ready to turn in your keys and stop being a car owner? Pro Tip Maggot: You won't have a choice.

http://electrek.co/2016/04/24/tesla-autopilot-probability-accident/

“The probability of having an accident is 50% lower if you have Autopilot on. Even with our first version. So we can see basically what’s the average number of kilometers to an accident – accident defined by airbag deployment. Even with this early version, it’s almost twice as good as a person.”

“I think it’s going to be important in term of satisfying regulators and the public to show statistically with a large amount of data – with billions of kilometers of driving – to say that the safety level is definitively better, by a meaningful margin, if it’s autonomous versus non-autonomous.”

The future of car transport

- You will type into your app where you want to go

Average person? I'd believe it. Compared to a safe, competent driver? Not so sure. Most accidents are probably caused by fucking impatient idiots who go straight through the turn-only lane because they couldn't be assed to wait half a minute for the light.

>>71963859
On a mile by mile basis, flying on a commercial airline is 625,000 times safer than driving your own car but people still freak out about flying. If autopilot is only twice as safe, people are going to avoid it because everyone believes they're better than average drivers.

The great thing about this is the next generation of cars will be more focused on interior design and front seat entertainment, since previously those things were seen as a hindrance to the driver and also a safety hazard/distraction so major car firms didnt put any efforts designing better media systems. Expect the next generation of cars to feel more like a comfy lounge than an automobile. Driving to work or a long interstate trip would feel more bearable. 5g internet, light field Tvs which will be projected onto the windshield. Better quality car entertainment systems.

Basically, yes. If the other driver was in manual mode they'd be 100% responsible. If both vehicles were in auto mode, the manufacturer would be liable... though it's incredibly unlikely any accident would be anything more than a walking-speed collision.

You should know that they block everything with fences including the streets. The people who are running aren't victims either, they paid to compete. And there's also the fact that there's a huge crowd watching over the fences everywhere, so coming close with a car would be impossible, let alone doing it accidentally.

Well considering Lidar(The sonar tech google uses on its driverless cars) currently costs more than 50gs, I dont think they would be using the tech on mid ranged cars for the forseeable future. Its only going to be used on luxury cars until they can lower the price to atleast 5gs to 10gs. The cars will have top notch interiors like most luxury cars.

Thats the most exciting part. Just like in I-robot, autonomous cars could reach speeds in excess of 150 miles in those closed off tunnels, driverless cars could eventually do the same since cars will be able to talk to one another in the future. The only reason we do have higher speed limits is because people are stupid and dont react quickly enough to things on the roads a d alzo people are unpredictable. When every car has autonomous capabilities, the speed limits will be doubled or tripled in many areas since autonmous cars react more quicker than people, and will also be more aware of its surroundings. Somjoirneys will become shorter.

Bullshit, people are actually being taught to put the brake to the floor and not pump. Fair enough, assuming the ABS actually works. We tested it at work, in snow at speeds up to 50kph. A couple of the ABS vehicles would actually go full lock until the last few feet. Manually pumping the brakes helped the ABS vehicles stop faster in each scenario. It seems the computer would have a brain fart, and not know what to do.

Don't get me wrong, slowing down for conditions is absolutely critical. But ABS does not help you in certain conditions..

More like 40,000 less deaths a year in USA alone.

Hospitals, ER, doctors, lawyers, traffic cops, taxi drivers, car repair, etc etc etc

It will be a tremendous amount of savings in costs for everyone in a society that adopts it. In America the total comes out to 1,000,000,000,000 dollars a year saved. This change alone can pay off America's debt.

Key point in understanding the future.

Cloud is a buzzword but it's an important thing to understand. You no longer own anything. It is all on a cloud, running on a computer not owned by you. Moving everything to the cloud is important in taking away your agency. So for instance, instead of owning a PC, you stream in everything from a local mainframe in your neighborhood. That cloud service replaces your PC, your PC becoming nothing more than a relay. This is already happening with many, many cloud services. You will no longer own shit, you just become entirely a consumer.

The same thing will happen to cars. No more individual car ownership. All cars must be owned by a regulated company complying with complex regulations meant to keep you the fuck away. Every single car on the road is rented for the ride. You don't own shit anymore. Inside the car you will be monitored and surveillance to make sure you don't damage the companies property.

Want to go to a neighborhood you don't belong? You need an invitation from someone that lives there. Want to go on a driveby? Good fucking luck. Any crime you commit will be impossible to do while using a car. People talk about the increase in crime but this will lead to a huge reduction in how possible it is to commit a crime.

The key switch will be individual ownership towards corporate ownership. You are just a client being served your car for the short duration of your ride. You won't own shit.
>>
>>71965070
Self driving cars are a few miles south of true AI buddy
>>
>>71975690
Also Cloud taxi services will be far more convenient for the average person. No insurance, no maintenance and repairs, and everything completely on demand.

People will switch to it because it is easier. People will stop owning their own car. If you value your own independence or ability to drive somewhere in privacy, you are fucked.

This is all good too. Authoritarianism is the natural future for technology.
>>
>>71975690
Slippery slope, the post. Self driving cars are a necessary step to prevent drunk driving accidents, which can and will happen long before any freedom to drive is taken away. You think those numbers are gonna go down by themselves?

of course
Future generations will laugh at the fact that we want to drive our own cars. Do you also want to pilot the plane? Do you also want to conduct the train? "But gramps why would you want to wake up 30 minutes earlier to get ready for work when you can just hop in your car and do it while it takes you there?" "Makes no sense gramps you senile fuck"
>>
>>71976000
It's a natural result of self driving cars. It will take many years to materialize though, but eventually self driving cars will turn car transport into a highly authoritarian system.

This is coupled with the rise in efficacy of home surveillance too. Basically crime is about to get shit on.

Doesn't the autopilot only work with highway driving? Feature is called adaptive cruise control and other automakers offer it, pretty cool but not really anything revolutionary. If so I think airbag deployments would be a pretty good measure of its safety.

We're not talking about anything remotely close to fully automated cars, though. And Musk is way to optimistic to think this will be happening in 1-5 years. I'd give it more like 10-15.

I was helping someone move on Friday, and when riding in the moving truck this afforded me the opportunity to get a Birdseye view into other cars. Sure enough I'd say -at least- 75% of the people I bothered looking at were in some way active on their smartphones while driving. Many of them had them in their laps to try to conceal their activity, but it was obvious to someone riding several feet higher than them. Those who weren't concealing their usage were unabashedly driving with one hand on the wheel, one on their phone, constantly shifting their attention between the road and their phone. I saw countless traffic laws broken in that hour long trip, and a few near-accidents. My uncle who is a mechanic said texting accidents far surpassed drunk driving a while ago, and that's ridiculous. Humans are irresponsible with our own lives and other people's, so when the time comes we might as well let robuts who won't get distracted by a text or Facebook notification chauffeur us around.

It only requires intelligence to produce the initial exploits. Those can then be sold to anyone that wants to use them. If you have an internet of things then that expands the potential of crime you can conduct electronically all the way up to murder. Is it really inconceivable that someone at some point will be killed by having their self driving car slam them into a wall?

Are you actually implying this scenario wouldn't happen, and how can you say it creates less crime when it isn't being done? Anyone who thinks manual driving will still be the norm 20 years from now is beyond retarded. This is the only answer.

I'm all for electric cars, it's about time we move past caveman tier internal combustion engines.

Now that batteries aren't shit, everything should be electric, save for a few things like freight and cargo vehicles and construction.

The only downside is they will shoehorn in autopilot and remote monitoring and control instead of implementing useful tools and backup safety features to enhance drivers, not push them aside.
>>
>>71963859

They are usually run by jews. They are putting us all in a scenario where all of humanity will be totally dependant

They will give this wonderful life altering technology… but they can take it away as well.

We see this on a smaller scale with Twitter Facebook deciding what they will allow people to post. A private company picks sides and has the ability to censor who they don't like.
