They've both fought wars with India. It's actually that simple. Pakistan, politically speaking, is a shit show. But their alliances are shaped by geography more than anything else. Research the burgeoning alliance between Indian and Afghanistan due to Pakistan situated between them. China and India actually got their border out of the '62 war. Thomas Barnett, if you're a fan of his, makes a good observation that there is more likelihood of conflict between China and India in the 21st century than between China and the US.

Honestly, I wish America was more physical.
