I don't think it's a good idea to assume every behavior is a coping mechanism for something. However, I agree there are probably many users who fall into the categories you described, consciously or not.
All I can offer is myself as an example. I come here because I find the pace of content generation addictive and I like seeing how people express themselves without filters. I have had ups and downs like anyone, but I think the correlation that you have to be emotionally stunted or damaged in some way to be coming here habitually is false.
I can't speak for tumblr because I don't frequent that site.

Sure. Users of both sites understand that, the leaders of the world are corrupt and care nothing for their citizens, wealthy bankers control everything, and the people constantly keep getting screwed over.

I personally also enjoy the lack of censorship too, it has a nice feel to it,
and unless you are easily rustled you can still have a good time.
I didn't mean to argue that everyone is, but i have noted the trend in the stereotype of users from each site tend to fall in to those stereotypes.
4chan tends to be more open to people who lack empathy and generally aren't very sensitive people thanks to the anonymity and lack of censorship.
on the other hand tumblr seems inviting to people who have hyper sensitivity etc thanks to the sites catering with their # with trigger warning and their open attacking of all forms of exclusion from the hive (except when its excluding straight white males lol)
But in both cases the individuals are intrigued to join thanks to sites catering to their emotional and/or social problems in a way.

People here don't bat an eyelash when somebody calls them dirty names. It has to be really bad to rustle some jimmies. I've seen and been in many civil arguments where both sides were calling each other faggots, then giving a logical response.

I've met plenty of people here that are not "damaged" but I have met plenty of people that have been fucked over by life. We don't pat each other on the back here, we tell each other to grow fucking backbones. tumblr believes in safe spaces and 4chan is very uncensored, the only issue is rummaging through the gore,porn,and shitposting to get to legitimate board discussion. The difference between us and them is that if they bring their discussions here, we laugh at them, give rebuttals via facts and statistics, they agro and leave whereas if we go there with our discussions we're called bigots and their biased mods ban us all together.

It's possible that 4chan users grow a shell, but for the most part, I also like to derive lulz as a means of coping.
I see society going sharply downhill (though some parts of 2016 are looking good so far), and I deal with it by laughing at the people fucking it up.
