It dies in all benchmarks that have to do with math. It is very fast for many, small server data transactions i.e. a chat server, however not much else just needs to jam tons of junk data back and fourth from a client to a server a high speeds.
Also the "not worry about threading" meme is so maddening. Not having to worry about it because the language has no ability to handle threading or concurrency is just terrible for anything but light weight web apps.
NodeJS is a meme language that is only used by hipsters with no real CS background.
I think people who are bad programers, especially bad programers with no CS background, enjoy JavaScript because it removes a lot of the structure and functionality they don't understand.

Streams are not exclusive to JavaScript.
Python, a relatively slow language is faster for all scientific computations. JavaScript is basically the slowest language there is for computation.

it really depends on what you're doing. I'm sure in IE6 computations in JS are not a breeze but I can't really fathom what heavy data processing you're doing that a math calculation would ever be a bottleneck. you can offshore these calculations to the client as well depending on what you're doing
action script was adobe's castle that they dictated. javascript is open source and better than running another exe inside your browser frame. if you can only think of actionscript as your goto you probably were just making some spammy flash games anyway
if you're using streams there's virtually no speed issue on the single thread. reads are threaded in the background and you get the response, and with streams you don't even have to buffer the response and can send it to the client immediately. unless you're calculating fibonacci 1000+ I can't imagine you'd have an issue here
