Vietnam was just a farce in general that the American public didn't even slightly support. Also, those "chemical weapons" were dropped on our own troops as well.

Not really. Truman wanted an unconditional surrender (first nuke) and wanted to scare the Soviets (second nuke).
You might be able to justify Hiroshima, but your "act of mercy" falls apart in Nagasaki.

Both nukes were to obtain that surrender. The first one wasn't enough so, on august 9th, they dropped the second and japan surrendered 3 days later.
