I'll give you a non-/pol/, and a bit more politican explination.
A superdelegate is a person who may vote as they please. They are by and large connected to the mainstream establishment. This system was put in place to essentially put the far left in their place, and get a candidate closer to the center.
There were issues in the 70s and 80s where genuinely liked democratic candidates were elected by primary, but were destroyed in the general. The exception was Cater, but he was ineffectual for some of the same reasons as Barack Obama.
The democratic national comittee established the superdelegates to, in essence, prevent the democratic voters from having too much power. Bernie Sanders is losing by an enormous margin because of super delegates. In actuality, he's only 250 behind Hillary in the delegates that are bound to the candidate. They are assigned by proportional vote.
At the convention, the delegates bound to a candidate don't do much besides vote for who they must, but the super delegates will vote for who they please.
I would not be shocked if the Republicans put a system like this in place to fuck future trumps over.
