Can someone explain this whole religion thing to me?
I grew up in a non-religious household and never really got exposed to much of that kind of stuff. From what I've seen personally I think most of this religious stuff people do is just downright silly. Especially the Jews with their not doing anything on the sabbath and the Muslims fruity prayer mat towards mecca every day.
Now this doesn't mean I've ruled out the idea of a higher power, I just don't really agree with the view of it most religions offer. And I still unironically use expressions like "God bless America" and have no trouble with stuff like "in God we trust" on our money.

Religion is merely a plan within a group in society that sets to make its members follow set rules to improve their productive roles in society, cope with the ideas of death and finality of life and project moral movements to rewrite tendencies in the populace where it's active.
Think of it as a more fluid and borderless nation state that appeals to the conscious humans greatest fears, gives rules to follow in order to become a more inclusive and worthy individual in a group competing with others, and to secure mans moral actions in a frame that helps him root out biological tendencies and failings to better adapt others in a singular group.
Religion is the state of society, monotheism is the start of a post biological transition, and no religion is the start of unraveling a society and breaking it apart into other groups.

they also can play a beneficial role in populations such as activating mobile genetic elements and spurring evolution, and they had a ton of laboratory uses without which medicine would be a decade behind technologically

Religion is quackery.
Farmers who worried about their crops being sufficient or not, getting destroyed by the weather. Folks who were worried about literally anything would go to the priest and get their worries taken away for a small fee. The worries might be gone, but the dangers persist, so it makes no difference whether you go to a priest or not.
Thanks to science and rationality however, farmers learned that they can increase their crop yield themselves. They realised that priests and other quacks aren't needed, that they don't make a difference.
Thats why socialism became a thing. Instead of going to the priest, now you can go to the gouvernment to have your worries taken away. For a small fee (that increases together with the worries) the state will provide.
The problem here is that there's little reason for most folks to worry, science and all that rationale that was developed reigns supreme, so the lefties create their own problems, like refugees that need all the support, pandering to migrants who refuse to integrate into our societies.
Knowing that we don't care, they force these 'issues' and start threatening us whenever we disagree, with the taxman standing right behind them.
Atheism is a part of this. Instead of praying for a divine entity to help and take worries away, atheists pray for the state to do it, and woe behold the sceptical who stand in their way.
Altogether then, I have concluded for myself that the entire concept of religion and its theological opposition is a harmful distraction that must be ignored if we wish to move on. You may decide for yourself whether you agree or not.

It's also important to remember that Islam came from a tribal society and didn't really go through a period of significant change to move away from those ideals; Islam still very much pushes the idea of its followers being their own separate tribe from the rest of the world who have a religious mandate to remain isolated, both physically and culturally.
It's the youngest of the Big Three religions, and as such it is the most immature and archaic of them all.

See I hold a personal ideology about it being ones personal internal goal to go out and achieve or fix their problems. Perhaps it is through a higher power that inspires them or motivates them do something but I highly doubt said power actually cares about us enough to have masses of people sit around and grovel to them. I feel the practices of religion only inhibit our drive to accomplish and improve the human spirit.
You are your own person, when you do stuff it's you doing it, don't discount your personal achievements because "oh God did it" and don't write off your misdeeds because "oh the devil made me do it" do what you do for yourself and contribute to human society.
Clearly at some point something was different about us as a whole, the only animals that rose up from the dirt and become what we are today, the only species on earth with significant achievement and a desire to advance rather than live in a constant status quo. Other than acts caused by natural means of the earth and the universe itself we're the only thing to cause significant change that can be observed in less than a single lifetime.
Humans are made to survive, advance and succeed. Not spend our lives on our knees appeasing some ruler, be they real or imaginary, instead we should work together on the common goal of advancement.

The reform will be done to help newer generations of muslims born in the influence of western ideals to not stray from their faith and to help recruit natives and others by lulling them in gently and trying to fix edges that make most other non muslims contrary and ideologically incompatible with Islam.
This will be a turning point, and the nations going through this might become Islamic based states if it works the same way other reformations have in the past.
