Even so, technically the Vice President is chosen by party delegates, not the candidate. In practice, it's usually up to the candidate, and delegates just go with it, but this isn't a usual election.
Even if Trump "wins" enough delegates to win on the first ballot, they can still change the rules, and if they really, really want to screw him over they can.
What's a lot more likely is that the VP nominee is going to become a serious bargaining chip for anybody who wants to come out the Republican candidate for President. If Trump's successful at moderating his tone, but walks in with only 1100 delegates, they can either screw him over or work to push him over the edge. I think it's almost a certainty that they'll pick a stooge like Rubio for him and dodge the contested convention. It almost seems Democratic if a unity of two guys with pledged delegates makes for a ticket, instead of having the party explicitly choosing the candidate.
