That's what I've been told too, the reason they kept doing it even after coins were no longer made from precious metals was allegedly to help the blind feel which coins are which.

I said it in another thread. They're opportunistic and selfish because they all have Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is genetic and environmentally created by the parents.
Because of the way they are, they will always do what benefits them and only them in the short term. Once they do it over and over again, people around them begin to notice this behavior, so they try to marginalize the people who speak up about it by calling them racists or abusing their reputations behind their back.
If you consistently act manipulative and selfish people around you will notice that you don't uplift the community. This was more important in the past when people were a few mistakes away from starving to death.
When enough of them proved they had no loyalty to the community, only to their own gain, they were rightfully driven out by the upstanding members of that community.
