Americans vote against their interests because they get played by the candidates pushing non-issues and "moral" issues. The abortion debate, pay gap, etc. They pander. And the masses always get tricked into voting for the candidate whose view on fringe issues mirrors their own. Literally no president can do anything but campaign for changes, and even if they don't, whatever majorities there are in the house and Senate will likely decide these kinds of issues anyway, and then the president can claim the credit or take the blame (depending on whether their own party's majority is responsible)
