Lots of variables here. Different areas of the country have different economies. In recent decades many jobs have moved south to places like North Carolina and Texas.
Considering everything, it's easy to find a job, but well-paying you may have to work your way up. This isn't necessarily an issue though, because taxes vary by state. In places like New Hampshire, Texas, Florida, etc. (usually Red states) taxes are very low. So if you live there, you can survive with less income. (NY, NJ, and California have very high taxes). And things here a cheap anyway, compared to other countries, and portion sizes are huge at restaurants (so you pay less and get more).
Also, consider foods you like. If you like seafood live near the coast where it's cheaper, if you like beef live inland where it's cheaper.

Or you can apply for a six month tourist visa. They will deny you first couple of times but if you own some property and have money in the bank(can always borrow) and can convince them you will return they will allow you to visit (tell them you want to see museums n shit). Find a job that will pay cash, work and go back before the visa expires. Repeat next year, the more visas you open the more chances you have to get another one.
