1: He has to win the Republican nomination, which is challenging and prone to fraud.
2: He has to then defeat Clinton in the election. Trump has white men and a handful of everyone else on his side. Clinton has just about every other demographic plus feminine white males.

I expect that if Trump is the nominee we'll only see one or two debates between them. Clinton will arrange for as few debates as possible, and they'll be rigged to give Trump little speaking time and loaded questions.

She is playing to her base amongst a Dem audience while not wanting to be seen generally as shifting too far to respond to Sanders, who she's already effectively beaten.

Trump's debate performance is similarly tailored for the primary and is content free. He simply is not going to be able to call Hillary a bad name and win over more people that he already had, being that there weren't 15 other people in the race to split the rest.

He was sitting on a lead mostly consistent of those outside the Republican structure. That's why he could just sit there and through out F bombs.
