The UK government is planning 10 year sentences for file-sharing offences.
The consultation period of the legislation, in which gubment reaches out to involved people, received 1,032 replies, 1,011 of whom opposed the 10 year sentence. Gubment of course ignored them and went ahead with the law.
The bird orchestrating all of this, Baroness Neville-Rolfe DBE CMG (who is also the minister for intellectual property - dohohoho), writes:
"The maximum sentence for online copyright infringement needed to be harmonised with physical infringement – at 10 years."
That's right, copyright infringement can get you longer time than rape and child cruelty.
A previous government report, the Gowers Review, was cited as support for the 10 year sentence, despite the fact that the Gowers Review argues against longer sentences: "It is Government policy that prison should be used mainly for serious and dangerous offenders and that sentences should only be as long as necessary for punishment and public protection." The review argued for fines, not jail time, for copyright infringement.
