Scots simply isn't a language. It was the English spoken in Lothian that spread all over the lowlands during the renaissance. Its peak was from 1500-1800 before it remerged with standardised English after the introduction of state schooling.
One can be both speaking Scots English and London English at the same time, because they are two dialects of the same language. One couldn't switch from English to even Frisian because they are distinct languages.
