You need one Indian ancestor within five generations to be elligible to Indian status. Now, according to Supreme Court ruling, it can be a Métis, which means you can go back even further. Does that means most French Canadian can claim Indian status? When do we stop paying taxes?

Of course you might want to repay original people for the land your ancestor stole, etc.
But at some point you need to define them, and blood is clearly not the only thing. Ancestry? Maybe from a strictly legal point of view (e.g. dad was wrong, so his family is compensated), but this would mean you are going to exclude all the "ethnic something" who are 100% ethnic but cannot prove enough ancestry. And you don't wanna do this either.

Either you rely on blood, but then exclude a lot of entitled ethnic people who simply don't have the paperwork to get recognition, or you rely on culture and self-determination.
In the latter case, either you allow for original people to appoint their lwn body (e.g. a "trade" union / lobby) that will decide who is native and who is not, or you allow for self-certification.
Again, in the case of a native institution, issues may ensue because these dudes can try to sell "ancestry" for cash or they may go radical and basically forbid mestizos from enjoying some privileges (just because "muh tribe must remain pure").
Conclusion:self determination is the only option. And this will allow everyone to claim native rights.
