Is music the opiate of the masses, or am I just an autist?

In many regards, I'm a normie (party, lots of friends, sex, etc.), but when it comes to music, I just can't comprehend most people's obsession with it. People swooning over Prince's death, crying if they win an artist's concert tickets, buying dozens of posters of singers. I don't get it.

I have music I really enjoy, even modern "degenerate" music (rap, edm). But I don't really care about going to concerts, collecting their music, and I don't feel some mystic high from vining to the beat. I've gone to a couple concerts, and the people there were fucking mesmerized, even the ones not smoking weed. They were all dying to get close to the stage, like it was the tabernacle. They had their eyes closed, and mouths open with wide smiles.

Music is just orchestrated sound that is pleasing to the ears. While that's great, I don't understand how that makes musical artists godly geniuses worthy of worship. Hard workers that make good-sounding music, sure. But demigods?

Anybody else feel this, or am I just autistic?

Though concerts and crying for lost musicians is a bit much, I don't think you've had something really resonate with you. Do you like music in a way that it's something to listen to, or do you actually feel something from it? Do you imagine the art of it all as you listen?
>>
I don't think music is enough of a distraction to act as an opiate. The internet is the opiate of the masses, myself included.

Prince had shit songs and as a person he was a bag of cocks. The only reason there's such an uproar over his irrelevant life ending is because he is a nigger.
If he died in 2006 nobody would have given a shit.

The problem isn't music. It's you for being so obsessed with how people react to things and also overblowing the things that you hear as if they are a representation of the reality outside of your room.

I have a lot of close ties to and work in several capacities within Canada's music industry, so I feel somewhat qualified to comment. I tend to find that music and escapism go hand in hand with fans. They form relationships in their heads with artists whom they've never met, but feel their art relates to something they, as a listener, feels. The type of commitment the audience has to their favorite artists depends almost exclusively on what sort of social behavior they engage in. Normies that crave attention and acceptance from their peers are, interestingly, the ones truly the least affected by deaths within the music scene despite how they might ham it up to make it seem like it's such a huge deal to them. Hippies, on the other hand, I can tell are truly affected by loss like this as the music can sometimes be related to psychedelic experiences or other life altering type experiences. Is it degenerate to drop LSD to Phish? Maybe, but that's another topic of discussion entirely. Point being that I don't think there is much wrong with being connected with an artist and their death provided that you're not just doing it for attention like far too many people do.

It's just dumb people.
Dumb people really like music, because all you do with it is sit there, be alive, be able to hear, and that's it. It's easy, it's pleasureful, and it's something they can do with others.

If you enjoy music a lot, congrats, you're an idiot.

Sorry, you're still an idiot. An advanced idiot, who likes advanced sounds, but still just a fucking moron.

Music is the worst form of media. Barely even an art form.

Music is all about "audience pussy" and the pyramid scheme of promoting impulsiveness. There are different levels.

Any agreeable message said or repeated with gusto attracts women, even (or especially) if the message praises destructive weaknesses. Just the other day I saw a music clip that glorified the teen skin self-cutting epidemic.

You can apply that to near every piece of art.
>Art is just pretty colors and shapes put together. You can just be alive and look at it with other people.
>Movies are just colorful lights and nice motions.

Although, funny enough, your criteria would make (hard) video games the epitome of art since it demands input from the player and skill to overcome.

Music culture is poisonous in a lot of ways, I also see families bonding over musical collaboration when the kids are younger. Churches have gospel songs

Music education at a young age demonstrably improves brain development

The bigger issue with music is that it represents societal failure as people move away from close knit communities like their family and church. They engage corporate made pop music and end up feeling alone
>>
>>71828380
Well lit might be good under that criteria because it's active engagement

Music is active engagement if you know music theory and the piece is complex AND resonant

I feel exactly the same way.

The music industry has replaced organized religion in every meaningful way. Huge group gatherings (Burning Man, Coachella, Woodstock) where people experience vivid mystical experiences aided by intoxicants and hallucinogens while the bands/artists (John Lennon, Bono, Bob Dylan) use moral posturing to control the values of anyone listening.

If you have any sense of identity none of this is outright going to turn you into a cultural Marxist zombie, but most people lack cultural identity and can't help but get sucked up into these kinds of movements.
>>
>>71828269
Why do people even use percocet recreationally? Isn't that shit loaded with paracetamol? That'll fuck your liver up faster than chronic alcoholism.

Seeing as Prince reportedly overdosed on percocet a couple of days before his death, I'm willing to bet he died of liver failure.
>>
Yeah, I dunno. I kind of agree OP. I can't even listen to the same stuff more than a couple times.

For spending years of my life listening to all the different music I could, I've never been moved the same way as a great book moves me. Not even a fraction as much.

Music can be a self help tool.

When I was an depressed teenager, I didn't listen to edgy music. Instead I listened to music with lyrics resembling positive affirmations.

Music worship is a kind of phase that too many people don't grow out of. I'll still shed a tear when Noel Gallagher dies though.

I was listening to fresh air with Terri Gross and she had on a former autist (specifically aspergers) who used electro-shock therapy to cure himself. The guy was a sound engineer and was like OP. After the first round of treatment he experienced music on an entirely different level, so much so that he was brought to tears. I'm really not suprised this person has this opinion.

I know exactly what you mean and have have the exact same thoughts.

I mostly use music as a distraction on boring train rides so i wont have to listen to other passengers bullshit. I also love 80s/90s music for partying/dancing.

There is however music (classic or Soundtracks) that makes me deeply excited for some reason and while listening to it I have to blink away tears sometimes. Its actually comparable to the excitement of driving a rollercoaster. There, i said it, now you can all call me a faggot.

Maybe other people feel that way about the music of certain artists and thus feel the need to worship that artist. Worship in itself is also something that alot of people love doing while others like you and me dont.

So apparently you havent found your special music yet (if there even is one for you) and you you simply have no interest in worshipping artists (like me).

Sound pretty simple to me.
>>
>>71825248
I'm the same, music is nice in the background or when I'm walking/working out/doing housework but I don't get a deep, emotional reaction from it. I envy people who talk about music really having a special place in their lives, associating music with a certain time but for me the majority of it is categorized either as good or shit.
>>
I didn't really get into music until a gained some emotional maturity. You're probably autistic OP.

It's pretty normal, to be quite honest my sweet teutonic friend.
Soundtracks are orchestral classical music re-tweaked for accompaniment reasons, so you're pretty much a classicbro.
Your reaction is a genuine one, you're mesmerized by the supreme greatness of music itself.

There's a chance that Prince was ritually murdered by the Illuminati.
A lot of times, a dead musician is worth more dead than alive, because when he dies, the sells of his albums and other stuff, increase.

Some people don't like paintings and don't get them.

A lot of people these days don't like poetry and don't read it.

Maybe you just don't like music? There's no rule that says everyone has to like it. In fact, there should be lots of people who don't, but are just going along in order to fit in with perceived social expectations.
>>
>>71825248
people feel emotional when anyone who's had an influence on their life has died. Yeah it's a little disturbing if you act like you lost a family member but people are paying respect to prince the musician, not prince the person.

it's just human nature
