I work in big pharma
It costs roughly 100+ million dollars to actually create a new drug and several years up to a decade for it to hit the markets
Introducing a drug to even be accepted by the FDA to hit clinical trials is a long process, recruiting and performing trials requires months of finding participants that meet needs and criteria
In essence, it'd be stupid as fuck for one company to spend billions only for other companies to obtain the drug and analyze the compounds to create a generic version to undercut the companies profits
Also, if the drug fails then the company is out the millions they spent. Look up the statistic of proposed drugs yearly and see the small fraction of drugs that actually hit market
