Easier said than done, I know - sometimes you can feint with your non dominant hand while your dominant hand comes in behind the head. With collar in hand, spin your fist around to the front of the dog (which seems counterintuitive, but most dogs can turn their necks far enough to bite your arm behind their head) and then roll your hand & forearm to one side as far as you can. By twisting your hand you can shorten the collar to basically nothing, which also drives your fist into the dog's throat. With a hand under their jaw and cinched tight to their neck, the dog *cannot* bite you. This also puts you in the perfect spot to leverage your bipedal stature - stand up and haul the dog off it's front legs (might be difficult with very large dogs) and boot that fucker in the ribs until you hear bones break. There's only one way to cure a dog that's aggressive enough to attack a human unprovoked, and that's to beat it to within an inch of its life.

Instead, offer your hand below the dog's nose, palm up (or fist clenched if you're scared - they don't give a fuck), and let the dog smell your hand. You should have a pretty good idea right away if the dog is friendly or not (hint: growl = bad).
Then start by scratching the lower back jaw - not the throat (it might think you mean to choke it), not the tip of the chin (easy to bite you), but just low and off to the side where basically every dog ever likes a scratch.
Once you've established that you're friendly, THEN you can move your hand to the top of the dog's head and give it a scratch.

Female dogs tend to be less aggressive than male dogs, just like with humans. Although if male dogs are neutered young enough they tend not to be any more aggressive than females. It's only a generalization though, there are always exceptions (like a female dog with puppies).
If you're a new dog owner most people recommend a female dog because it's biologically tuned to accept being a beta to your alpha. Intact male dogs usually have to be "persuaded" of their position in the pack.

You know I never really thought about pit bulls untill my mom got sick and I had to help take care of her. There are pit bulls in the neighborhood she lived in and I knew if any of them got loose and attacked her (happens often around here), she'd be killed. It became a real concern having to always worry about her walking to the store or whatever. Truly a selfish thing to own, they are not necessary and they fill all the animal shelters. If you're smart you get a purebred one from a good breeder (not a show breeder, one that breeds for health).
They cost a lot right away, but I'll let you in on a secret. When you just go to the pond and buy some mutt or even a seemingly purebred dog, you will set yourself up for a choice a few years down the road. Your dog will get very sick with age, and you may not know what it is and the vet may not really find out.
You'll then either spend enormous amounts of money on finding and fixing a problem that may not actually be the problem, or you let the dog die a slow painful death, or you put him down.
When you get a purebred dog, you know in advance which issues he's vulnerable to as a quality breeder will keep track of the breeds health issue and will aim to minimize them.
There's still a good chance he'll get one of the breeds typical issues, but you'll atleast know what kind of money to treat it you will be looking at.
Essentially: if you want your dog to age gracefully and are prepared to fix health issues as he gets older, get a purebred one from a good non-show breeder.

It's showing how inbreeding has affected various breeds over time. The Bull Terrier has that horribly deformed nose now, the Boxer and German Shepard have emaciated hind legs and hips, Bulldogs and Pugs have had their faces smashed in to the point of causing respiratory problems, Daschunds have had their spines stretched out dangerously far, etc etc. Hell there are even some dogs that will be euthanized in show-lines if they don't come out with the proper genetic defect (Rhodesian Ridgeback - the ridge is actually a mutation that all but guarantees health problems later on).
Essentially, show dogs are a collection of mutant freaks. Not because they're good at anything, but simply because someone liked the way they looked. And it's doing terrible harm to the health of these animals.
