Every since West Roman Empire fell Estern Europe had lower GDP per capita. Why?
Because entire region is dislocated from global trade routes and seas by which they go through. First Med, and now for 500 years and ongoing, Atlantic.
Having ones country in the coast of such seas means lower transport costs of Everything, greater accumulation of capital, better infrastructure ..everything.
