Well you'll have to take up your grievances with other historians then. I did not make the argument up. I think the original idea of a strategic conversion by the Khazars to Judaism came from Salo Wittmayer Baron, though I've read several historians who agreed with the thesis.
In this case the idea isn't that the Arabs or Byzantines were necessarily actively attempting to force the pagan Khazars to convert. However, the Khazars were still being pressured by the competing religions of Christianity and Islam by the geographical proximity of the Khazar state to the Arab and Byzantine realms.
I did mention a caveat to the theory though, which might lend credence to your argument. In reality the Khazars had much closer ties to the byzantines than to the arabs, which would dispel the notion, perhaps, that they had truly sought Judaism as a means to neutrality.
Another theory on the Khazar conversion is that Jews fled to the pagan state because it was relatively tolerant, and the exodus of Jews to the state prompted an eventual conversion by the elite as the new immigrants acquired a higher profile.

To be honest, I don't know the answer myself. There are competing theories about why the Khazarians converted to Judaism and I think several of them could be legitimate. I do still believe in the legitimate possibility that they converted to Judaism at least partially to avoid maximum alienation of either their Arabic or Byzantine neighbors. Judaism could be seen as a still somewhat acceptable alternative to both of their primary neighbors.
It's likely that the presence of happy merchants and Jews fleeing persecution in the Byzantine Empire had an effect as well though, admittedly.

The only thing you missed in forming that argument is Palestinian Christians and Samaritans, and also native Muslim population.
