Dear Chairs, dear delegates,
the delegation of Senegal is honoured to be present here today and sincerly hopes that this conference will produce fruitful results. Senegal firmly believes that peace and stability are the cornerstones of a healthy Middle Eastern Region. Such a Middle East can exist only when ISIS is done for and as such Senegal believes that the Kurdish Peshmerga units currently fighting against the barbaric forces of Daesh deserve full UN backing. Troops fielded by the Kurdish Autonomous Region are chronically underequipped and often face shortages. Most importantly the Peshmerga often lack heavy weaponry such as heavy guns, howitzers, rockets, etc. Without such weapon systems the Kurds are condemned to semi-symetrical warfare, fighting openly with Daesh only when supported by allied airstrikes.
Further on Senegal thinks that, even more than the Peshmerga, it is the Syrian Kurds of the YPG (People’s Protection Units) that urgently need our help. The men and women of the YPG are forced to buy their weapons themselves with their choice usually limited between different versions of the Kalashnikov rifle that is prolific in Middle Eastern black markets. They are only minimally equipped with anti-tank missiles (ATMs) which they desperately need.
If we want to entertain the idea of an organized Kurdish force in Syria we will need to urgently supply these fighters with more than light weapons, especially when Daesh is able to field fully motorized offensives with captured tanks, armored cars and humvees.
We therefor want to stress the importance of providing proper equipment to our allies, if we want to finally end the humanitarian tragedy that is the Levant region and the murderous rampage of the IS.
