I know a guy who's sister lives in Dubai… he says it's kind of a bleak place to live, despite the wealth.
I realize a lot of these buildings don't always create pleasant cities… but there is a certain ambition that can't be discounted.

The burj Khalifa is fucking retarded because it has such a low square footage compared to American skyscrapers, while being much taller. For a functional skyscraper see the hotel outside of the Muslim cube, abraj al bait. It's one of the most expensive buildings in the world, has a Xbox hueg clock and is the 4th tallest building in the world while also having a shit ton of floor space. It is also accompanied by a few lesser high rises as part of the $15 billion cost.

Dubai's skyscrapper boom happened right before the 2008 crash.
World Trade Center towers finished before the oil crisis and mid 70s slump.

I've been to China and I've seen it for myself. Even in populous cities like Beijing and Shanghai, most of the people live in dilapidated five-story walkups while the newer high-rises are hollow shells. It's especially evident at night when you see 40-story apartment complexes with maybe one or two lights on.
