Why are Japs not as ashamed as the Germans when it comes to their WW2 history?

Losing is always shameful. Germans were different when the war ended. Nationalism was still strong. But there was no talk about the war anymore. There was a program to educate the former nazis.
There is something in westen europeans that can be exploited. Others do not care what others think of them. They honour their own dead and thats it.
In Germany its the other way around. The former enemy deaths are honoured and ww2 was "won".
In Japan they did not have the same education program. Somehow their economy boomed too. So there were probably similar psychological triggers that let them work harder to make up for the lost war.

Dehumanization of japanese was common and not frowned upon. The GIs even took suveniers like body parts. Look up US propaganda posters to see the meme.
The german meme was successfully introduced by making the depicted german not stupid and evil but smart and evil. This was more trustworthy to believe in than the simple propaganda meme.

John Dower has an excellent book on the cultural engineering of the occupation, Embracing Defeat. It wasn't until the 90's when Iris Chang wrote the first (albeit poorly sourced and researched) English language account of the massacre at Nanjing that wider western audiences and the Chinese took a fresh interest into Japanese war crimes. Now, the Chinese government recognizes the study of it as useful for PR leverage against Japan and it serves as a useful tool to galvanize Chinese people into a nationalistic frenzy/anti Japanese sentiment when it suits certain foreign policy goals.
